I’m glad you’re here. I’m glad you clicked here, right now, and you’re reading this. Believe it or not, I wrote this post just for you.
You matter so much. Do you know that? There’s something inside of you that is so different from everyone around you-maybe it’s your creativity? Your ambition? You know what it is. And if you don’t, I can tell you that what makes you different from everyone else is your ability to survive yourself.
Yes, it’s possible to have to fight a battle against yourself-trust me. I know. Sometimes you won’t win, and that’s okay too. As long as you don’t give up, you’ll win eventually. It will be a hard fought battle and you’ll have a lot of scars. But, those scars will be something only you can see. And if they’re not, wear them proudly-there’s no medal for surviving your own brain. Those scars are your body’s way of saying, “here it is. Here’s the evidence that you, a run of the mill badass, rose from the depths of your mind a conquering hero.”
Here’s the thing; adversity will change you. You can’t walk through a fire without getting burnt. But, much like the proverbial steel you’re made of, adversity will change you on a deep level but it will not destroy you. Instead, you will emerge stronger and more resilient then ever. When you’re in the moment, the impossibility of improvement hurts like the pain of a million knives ripping you to shreds slowly and mercilessly. Keep looking ahead. Ahead of you is a life full of pain and anger, but it will drive you. Maybe you will have flashbacks, nightmares and anxiety, but it will fuel you. You will succeed because you have been to your lowest point and you know there is nothing left to fear.
You will falter, and that’s okay. You might miss a step of the stairway to recovery, but you’ll catch your footing and eventually, you’ll climb at an even pace. You will never reach the top, but you will have a journey that you can be proud of. Along the way, you will learn to recognize the signs of a relapse and you’ll seek help or self help. You’ll do this because you’re not able to fail-survival is built into you now.
Someday, you’ll look back and behind you will be the ashes of a million acres burned. But, this pain cannot reach you. Though the embers are still hot, the fire will not restart. You will be able to explore the ruins and rebuild, because you will know that the most beautiful flowers grow from scorched earth.
You will make it through this. You don’t know this now, but you will. Maybe we don’t know each other, but I have faith in you, and I join a million voices that have faith in you, too. Don’t give up.
Never stop fighting.
